Liverpool Outclass Marseille In UCL Showdown

Liverpool outclassed Marseille in a hard-fought 3-0 victory, retaining their position in the top-flight of the Champions League standings with 15 points.

The Reds left it late before taking the lead, to confront the resolve of the Ligue 1 side, who were also offensive and coordinated in the attack. Even though he did not score, Hugo Ekitike played a significant role in causing problems for Marseille.

Dominik Szoboszlai put the Reds in the lead from a free-kick in the added minutes to the first half. The lead doubled in the second period, when Frimpong dribbled past a defender inside the box and blasted a shot that deflected off Gernomi Rulli and into the net.

Moments after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang forced a save in the injury time, Cody Gakpo scored the winner. The striker received a pass from Ryan Gravenberch in the box and curled the ball into the left angle.

Frimpong's effort could have been his first UEFA Champions League goal for Liverpool, but the goal was counted as an own goal for deflecting off the goalkeeper. Liverpool remained in the fourth position with 15 points, and Marseille remained in the play-off qualifiers zone with 9 points.

Overview

Matseille played impressively well and did put Liverpool to work. The goals did not come easily, and there were multiple instances in which the Reds could have scored. Even as resolute as the Ligue 1 side was, Ekitike wasted a couple of chances, and also assisted with a near miss from Mohamed's head before Frimpong broke through to score.

Mason Greenwood was effective in the attack for Marseille. He found a good rhythm with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who forced a save in the injury time. The Congolese replaced Amine Gouiri to reimburse the attack, but the Reds scored shortly after and quelled their aggression. Liverpool maintained an offensive outlook by replacing Ekitike with Cody Gakpo, who produced the winning goal. Even as they were defeated, it was not a humiliating defeat for the French side.
