AFCON 2025: Nigeria Beat Egypt On P3nalties, Win Bronze Medal
Egypt lost the semi-final play-off against Nigeria on penalties (4-2), following a goalless draw, despite extra time, and settled for a consolation prize of the bronze medal at the AFCON Cup in Morocco.
Nigeria have not won the title in 13 years. They finished as runners-up in the last edition, losing to the host nation, the Ivory Coast. In this edition, they lost to the host nation, Morocco, on penalties after a goalless draw that spanned the game time and extra time.
Likewise, Egypt will continue to wait for its first African Cup of Nations title since 2010. They lost 1-0 to Senegal in the semi-final, resulting in a third-place play-off against Nigeria, which they lost.
While Nigeria scored four out of five spot-kicks, Egypt lost two out of four. Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Sallah lost their spot-kick, giving the Super Eagles the victory on penalties.
However, Nigeria had been AFCON’s dominant force all the way up to the semi-finals, but they met their equals in the last four and were dumped out by Morocco. The Super Eagles are three-time champions, with five silver medals and eight bronze medals.
