Nick Woltemade's Goals Lead Newcastle To Tough Draw Against Chelsea
Chelsea narrowly secured a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Newcastle United's St. James' Park, following a blistering performance from their hosts, with Nick Woltemade scoring a brace.
Newcastle started off offensively and kept the pace to the closing minutes. Chelsea did not enjoy much control, leaving their midfield vulnerable for the Magpies to penetrate. Eventually, they were able to get a draw.
Woltemade put the side ahead, scoring two goals within four minutes. He reacted quickly to finish off a rebound shot from Anthony Gordon, who in the 24th minutes, darted down the left, cross the ball for Woltemade to flick into the net.
Chelsea responded to the deficit after the interval. Reece James scored Chelsea's first goal from a free-kick. Then, Joao Pedro balanced the scoresheet when Robert Sanchez's cross-pitch lob set him off for a fast break. He latched onto the box; striking the ball past on-rushing Aaron Ramsdale in the 66th minute.
Settling for a draw was the best Chelsea could get. Newcastle were terrific: they lost their previous Premier League game to Sunderland. Meanwhile, having the maximum points would have reduced the gap between the Chelsea and Aston Villa in the top four.
Overview
It was a dominant first half for Newcastle United. The Blues had a difficult day holding off Gorson from troubling their defense, paving the way to Woltemade's goals. Chelsea's defense was unable to keep up it the tenacity.
The Magpies dominance continued even after they equalised the second half. Yoane Wissa replaced Woltemade, allowing Harvey Barnes to move into space as the attacker in replacement of Woltemade. Both Malo Gusto and James were faced with huge task of keep Barnes at bay,. Barnes' combination with Wissa further bolstered the offensive against Chelsea. However, it was a great game for both sides and Newscatle made the most of their own turf.
