Mainz Claim Stunning Draw Against Bayern Munich

Mainz held off a Bayern Munich onslaught on their home turf, coming from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against the Bundesliga defending champions.

Initially, it was unlikely that a side like Mainz would make a thing out of their visit to Allianz Arena until Kacper Potulski struck. Bayern had maintained a winning streak spanning five Bundesliga games, and that came to a halt in the 45th+2 minute.

Michael Oliseh instigated the opening goal but did not score. He dazzled past a couple of opponents and played in Harry Kane. The striker's pass found Serge Gnabry, whose cutback Lennart Karl tapped into the net. In the closing minutes of the first half, Mainz equalized through Potulski. The defender headed William Boving's free-kick into the back of the net.

Mainz maintained their strong influence and took the lead in the second half. Stefan Bell moved into space inside Bayern's half and lobbed a cross into the box for Lee Jae-sung's header. Neuer was neatly beaten as the header hovered across into the left corner. Unfortunately, Potulski drew a penalty for dropping Harry Kane in the box. The striker converted the spot-kick and leveled the terms for Bayern.

Mainz drew their previous game against Lech Poznan. Having to draw against Bayern Munich was their biggest performance since they defeated Fiorentina 2-1 in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Overview

Mainz were meticulous and exploited the lapses in Bayern's defense. Lee Jae-sung for a scenario. The midfielder stood in between two defenders before moving into space for a header. It was a well-deserved point for the visitors, despite the pressure from their hosts.
