Liverpool Claim Comfortable Year-End Victory Over Wolves
Hugo Ekitike had an impressive game, leading Liverpool to a 2-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, assisting Florian Wirtz with his first Premier League goal for the Reds.
The Reds have maintained their winning form since their last defeat to Sunderland. Ever since, they have remained unbeaten, despite sharing spoils against Sunderland and Leeds, which was followed by victory against Brighton at Anfield and away at Tottenham.
Liverpool scored both goals in the latter part of the first half. With a cutback from Jeremie Firmpong, Ryan Gravenberch struck a superb low-cut curly shot down a difficult angle of the bottom left post. The second goal followed immediately, as Ekitike poled a pass through for Wirtz, who finished off the opportunity.
Wolves maintained pressure, and it paid off when Tolu Arokodare's header was saved into Santiago Nueno's reach for a tap-in. The victory extended Liverpool's winning streak to four in their previous six Premier League games.
Overview
After a brilliant start, it turned out to be sluggish later on, as Liverpool could have used their spell of possession to seal the game. Arne Slot made triple changes to reinforce the defense and the attacking frontline, with Cody Gakpo replacing Hugo Ekitike and Bradley replacing Federico Chiesa. It paid off with victory and not with more goals.
Earlier in the game, Ekitike had the finest chance to put the Red in the lead, but the ball went just wide to clip the frame. In the absence of Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai, Ekitike's influence was prominent.
