Aston Villa End Arsenal's Unbeaten Run
Arsenal suffered a huge setback on their trip to Villa Park where they were hosted by Aston Villa and lost 2-1, following Emi Buendia's stoppage time goal.
The Gunners found their hosts really difficult, making their efforts to keep the scoreline safe at least costly. Villa had been unbeaten in the previous five Premier League games. Besides Liverpool, hey had won their last encounters with both Chelsea and Manchester City.
Villa took the lead from Matty Cash's strike. The defender moved into space inside the box, and while he was challenged by Eberechi Eze, he struck the ball to beat David Raya to the net. Arsenal regained level terms after the interval, as Leandro Trossard struck a loose ball from Bukayo Saka's cutback into the net.
The host left it last into the last minutes before Beundia, who came as a substitute struck in the winning goal. While Arsenal players were struggling to clear a loose ball out of the box, the Argentine curled a right-footed shot into the top corner of the net in the 90th-5 minute.
It was a huge blow to Arsenal, whose lead at the top of the Premier League table has now been reduced to three points. The defeat ended Arsenal's unbeaten run in all competitions since their last against Liverpool in August.
Overview
Arsenal had a great start but it was not enough. They missed the chance to move ahead from Eze's tap-in. He was caught offside. Saka did a great job at that. However, Villa gradually settled into the game and Cash found scoring chances. He can be terrific on a counter like he did against Manchester City in their last encounter at home. Declan Rice knew that, blocking his first attempt, but on his second attempt, he was unmarked.
Villa were better off in the second half. Arsenal's midfield was weak, depending more on the wings. Villa had proven to be terrific if allowed time in the box and Buendia's stoppage time goal did just that. Villa had fewer chances in the box compared to how often Arsenal had in theirs.
