Manchester United Narrowly Force Draw Against Tottenham With Stoppage Time Equalizer
Manchester United narrowly forced a 2-2 draw against Tottenham, following a comeback from Mattijs de Ligt's stoppage time header.
Tottenham came into the match on the back of two consecutive defeats from their previous Premier League games, which set them back on their quest to top the table. However, United have been in an incredible shape with four games unbeaten run in the Premier League. Nevertheless, both sides desperately needed to win to build up points to be in the front row of the table.
United had led the game from Bryan Mbeumo's opener and they were near making away with the lead before Tottenham pulled back, scoring twice within seven minutes. Both sides managed to salvaged a point from the match with two injury time goals within five minutes.
Mbeumo set off the scoresheet with the opening goal midway through the first half. Matheus Cunha played in Amad Diallo on the right flank, and the winger lobbed a cross over into the six-yard box for Mbeumo's header.
The scoreline stayed the same until 84th minute when Destiny Udogie broke through the left flank and played in Mathys Tel, who rounded de Ligt before curling the ball into the bottom left corner. Spurs followed up with the second goal in the 91st minute, as Richarlison's header deflected Wilson Odobert's shot into the box.
United responded to the lead with a comeback five minutes later. Bruno Fernandes lobbed in a cross from a corner, arriving well for a header in the six-yard box, and de Ligt was left undisturbed enough to get an header, beating Vicario to the net.
Besides scoring the opening goal, Mbeumo was involved the United's comeback 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest last weekend. He has now scored four goals in four previous Premier League games. He scored a brace for the side against Brighton in their 4-2 home victory.
Overview
It was a shared outcome after United had done well, keeping a lead that should have given the side the victory. Spurs' substitutions delivered the equalizer, and United's defensive flop paved the way to that.
Spurs had capitalised on the left flank just as United's Amad had wanted to make a break from the same flank. Since United wanted to keep the scoreline, Tel struck and he was barely challenged, despite de Ligt and Luke Shaw standing by.
