Jannik Sinner Wins Nitto ATP Finals To Defend Title
Jannik Sinner is the Nitto ATP Finals champion for the second time in a row after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in a two-set showdown by 7-6(4), 7-5 in Turin.
Jannik got his revenge on Alcaraz, and it did not come easily. It was a blockbuster match, in which Jannik had to save a break point advantage at 5-6, forcing a tiebreak.
History was at stake for Alcaraz. He could not afford to lose, as no Spaniard had won the Nitto ATP Finals after Rafael Nadal since 2013. The second set was fierce, and Jannik took many risks by deploying drop shots and keeping his shots deeper to avoid offensive reactions from Alcaraz.
It was settled when Alcaraz unforced a backhand. Jannik became the champion for the second time in a row. It was the Italian's third consecutive appearance in the final of the Nitto ATP Finals.
"I thought at the beginning of the match that I could beat him, that I could compete against him here," Alcaraz reflected after the match. "It didn't surprise [me]at all that I was really close. It was just about the tennis."
Alcaraz had won two consecutive meetings of their previous encounters, having a head-to-head lead in their overall meetings for the season by 4-2. He was presented with the Year-End World No.1 trophy after his match against Lorenzo Musetti.
