Max Verstappen Poles At US GP Qualifying Session As Lando Norris Trailed
Max Verstappen clinched his seventh pole of the season at the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, and will be starting as the pole sitter for the first time in Texas since 2021.
Red Bull dominated the Sprint sessions from the SQ and the Sprint race; the Dutch driver poled at each of those sessions, after an unimpressive practice session. On the other hand, the McLaren pair have had a difficult time at both sessions, and the Sprint was even worse. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri crashed out of the race at Turn 1 of the first lap.
Esteban Ocon negotiated the lanes carelessly, running into Norris, and that cascaded into a collision with Piastri. Both McLarens retired from the race, giving Verstappen the open cheque to claim eight points from the Sprint.
Verstappen edged out his McLaren rival, Norris, to pole in the qualifying session, setting the fastest lap at 1:32.510 seconds. On the second run, Norris missed the opportunity to beat Verstappen, who was ruled out of making a second run for returning to the queue later than the required 50 seconds. Norris could not defend the pole he won in last year's edition.
By the way, the qualifying session was not without chaos as debutant Isack Hadjar retired in Q1 after spinning out of the tracks to collide with the walls, damaging his car.
