Manchester United Shrugged Off Disappointment Against Sunderland On Ruben Amorim's 50th Game

Manager Amorim took charge of his 50th game as Manchester United boss as they attained victory against Sunderland by 2-0 at Old Trafford.

None of the previous five permanent United managers have won their 50th game in charge, but Amorim could not follow that trend to avoid a miserable tenure. Another dreadful performance in a 3-1 defeat at Brentford last weekend, rendered the Red Devils languishing in the bottom half and still without back-to-back Premier League wins under the Portuguese manager.

Furthermore, only four managers in Premier League history have accrued fewer than his 34 points when appointed to an existing side in the division. He can take some heart from the fact that United have won successive home Premier League matches, but they have not won three in a row in over two years.

United have conceded 11 goals from 56 shots faced in the Premier League this term, the worst such ratio in the division. They avoided that trend with a clean sheet victory against Sunderland as Mason Mount brilliantly finished off Bryan Mbeumo's cross to set the side ahead in the eighth minute. Benjamin Sesko broke his goal-drought by scoring the second goal, side-footing into the net a back flicker from Sunderland's Nordi Mukiele's header, half an hour into the game.

United are unbeaten in their last 24 Premier League games against promoted sides, but the match was the first head-to-head between the sides since April 2017. Sunderland's goal drought continued as they have been unable to score in three of their previous four Premier League games.
