Liverpool Regain Winning Form, Thrashing Frankfurt At Home
Eintracht Frankfurt lost big time to Liverpool in a 5-1 comeback, restoring the Premier League to winning form after five consecutive winless runs in all competitions.
Liverpool lost their previous UEFA Champions League game against Galatasaray and then returned to their domestic league, where they lost three consecutive games. The performance casts a shadow of doubt over the side's initial impressive runs from the start of the season. Nevertheless, the Reds did not let Frankfurt do them dirty.
Initially, the game swung Liverpool's way, forcing two saves from Zetterer before the Germans found a buildup, leading to Rasmus Kristenten's strike from inside the box. Hugo Ekitike responded to the deficit for Liverpool. Receiving a through ball from Robertson, the striker latched onto the Germans' box and finished off the counter, leveling the scoresheet for Liverpool.
Four minutes later, Frankfurt let it loose, and Virgil van Dijk found a space for a header from Cody Gakpo's corner and glided to nod the aerial ball past Zetterer for the second goal. Ibrahimah Konate scored the third, nodding home Dominik Szoboszlai's corner on the brink of halftime.
Frankfurt did not get better after the interval. Gakpo arrived on time for a tap-in of Florin Writz's cross following a counter, and Szoboszlai struck a 20-yard shot to make it the fifth goal.
The victory restored the Reds to winning form. It was the biggest victory margin for Liverpool this season, and Ekitike scored his first goal against his former side, Frankfurt.
Overview
Liverpool made an impressive comeback to undo the deficit, with two defenders scoring a goal apiece before the interval. The Germans were overpowered by the relentless Reds, despite the absence of Mohamed Salah. For the earliest part of the second half, the Germans' midfield was in the hands of the Reds, putting pressure on the defense.
Frankfurt let it loose in their defense for Liverpool to penetrate. Hence, the fourth goal from Gakpo, despite Michale Zetterer's multiple saves to keep the side in the game. The Reds had a field day while Frankfurt seemed to have run out of ideas as their opponents reinforced their attacking frontline, substituting Ekitike and Gakpo with Salah and Alexis Mac Allister.
