Harry Maguire Leads Man. United's Comeback Victory Against Liverpool At Anfield
Manchester United claimed what can be described as their biggest victory in the Premier League this season, defeating Liverpool by 2-1 at Anfield with a second-half comeback from Harry Maguire's header.
Before the international break, Ruben Amorim was under pressure over the team's performance. He was later relieved of the pressure as the club's owner threw his weight behind him, guaranteeing his job for more seasons to come.
However, United came into the game with a different composure, and the early goal from Bryan Mbeumo was a succor to their manager. United gained an advantage from a quick break from the midfield, and Amad Diallo released a pass to Mbeumo, who struck the ball to beat Allison to the net in the 2nd seconds.
The Reds held on, piling pressure on United until the second half, when Cody Gakpo darted through two defenders inside the six-yard box, tapping Federico Chiesa's shot into the net. United kept the pressure on their hosts until Bruno Fernandez's corner, when Mbeumo's shot was deflected back to the Portuguese, whose lob arrived rightly for Maguire's header for United's second goal in the 84th minute.
It was United's first back-to-back victory in the Premier League this season and lifted the side to ninth in the EPL standings with 13 points. Conversely, it was Liverpool's first Premier League defeat to United at Anfield since 2016. The Reds have now remained winless in four consecutive games in all competitions.
Overview
Beating the Reds was a tedious job for United. Though Mbeomo's opening goal set them ahead, it was yet a difficult task to contain the Reds at Anfield. Bruno Fernandez did a great job of keeping the balls flowing through the midfield, but they were unable to keep the ball and break through. However,
De Ligt was a great deal for United. He was prominent in the defense and made his presence felt on the overlap. For much of the first half, Amad and Mbeumo kept the balls flowing through the right wing, and that produced the opening goal. As the game became intense, Patrick Dorgu became prominent on the right wing. It was effective enough to curb the Reds.
