Chelsea Snap Liverpool's Unbeaten Run With Estavao's Stoppage-Time Goal
Chelsea have dealt a blow to Liverpool's unbeaten run and the Premier League table lead as they defeated the Reds with a 2-1 comeback victory from Estavao's injury-time goal at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool have now dropped beneath Arsenal, who are now the Premier League table leaders, by one point ahead of the Reds. Meanwhile, the Blues regained winning ways after a three-game winless run in the Premier League.
The hosts took the lead from Moises Calceido's individual effort. Early into the first half, the midfielder received a pass from Mateo Gusto and dazzled past the Reds' defender before lashing the ball into the net.
Liverpool regained level terms in the second half as Alexander Isak dropped a cut-back from Szoboszlai in the path of on-running Cody Gakpo, who darted past two defenders and poked the ball into the net. It took until stoppage time for Chelsea to reclaim the lead. Cucurella dazzled into the Reds box on the right flank and cut back a cross to Estavao, who slammed the ball past Giorgi Mamardashvili and into the net.
As Chelsea maintained its unbeaten run in five Premier League home games against Liverpool, the Reds are now second behind Arsenal in the Premier League table with 15 points. The Reds slid behind Arsenal for the first time this season.
Overview
Arguably, Chelsea outperformed and outpaced Liverpool for the most part of the first half. The Reds narrowly escaped a penalty, which should have been awarded for Garnacho. Liverpool were defensive while Chelsea was getting their money's worth from Garnacho, making the starting lineup. The former Manchester United winger was a pain in the pants for the Reds, barrelling down the left wing.
Liverpool showed the class of a team they are made of when the Blues let it loose in the defense, paving the way for Cody Gakpo to find space between Josh Acheampong and Matteo Cucurella inside the six-yard box. The latter made up for the flop, assisting with the winning goal from Estavos.
