Virgil van Dijk's Injury Time Stunner Seals Liverpool's Victory Against Atletico Madrid In UCL Opening Game
Liverpool made an unsuspecting injury-time comeback to beat Atletico Madrid by 3-2 in the Champions League opening game.
Atletico came from a two-goal deficit to cancel out the Reds' lead. Eventually, Virgil van Dijk came to the Reds' rescue, scoring the winner in the stoppages. Effectively, the Spaniards were dealt a disappointing blow at Anfield.
Salah set the tone when Andrew Robertson deflected his free-kick into the net, giving Liverpool the lead in the 4th minute. In just two minutes, Salah scored his 45th goal for the side. He did a one-two with Gravenberch and charged past three defenders, hitting a left-footed shot past Oblak for the Reds' second goal.
Before the halftime break, Atletico pulled one back as Llorente poked Raspadori's pass to beat Allison to the goal. Llorente leveled the scoresheet for the side when his volley took a deflection on Mac Allister to beat Alliaon to the goal.
Unfortunately for the Spaniards, Virgil van Dijk settled the game for Liverpool with a header. Szoboszlai's cross arrived rightly for the defender, whose header beat Oblak into the net.
The stoppage time goal restored Liverpool's unbeaten run in the UEFA Champions League opening games. Salah remained the Reds' all-time top scorer in the competition with 45 goals.
