Manchester United Concede Big Loss To Manchester City In Derby At Etihad Stadium
Manchester City returns from the international break to thrash Manchester United 3-0 in a Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City come into the derby on the back of successive defeats, making this the first time since 2004/05 that they have lost two of their opening three league matches. Their three-point tally after three games is the lowest of any side Pep Guardiola has managed.
However, a lengthy injury list has hardly helped matters, but City appear primed to bounce back as they had won five successive home league games before losing to Tottenham last month.
Foden Phil opened the scoring with a header that turned in Jeremy Doku's individual effort that broke through United's defense. After the halftime break, Erling Haaland doubled the lead, turning in Doku's pass from close range.
Bryan Mbeumo came close to pulling one back for United. Patrick Dorgu's delivery landed right for the winger and struck a volley, forcing a save from Gianluigi Donmarumma. Thereafter, Bernando Silva released a pass to Haaland, who latched onto the ball and finished off the chance, striking the ball down the bottom right of the goal.
City have won five of the last eight Premier League meetings between these sides, and have won seven of the previous 20 meetings in this competition at the Etihad Stadium.
Overview
After City had had the better part of the game, for United to make a comeback in the latter part was a long haul, and their effort was not gelling. Bryan Mbeumo was impactful, but City's defense was not giving way to his pressure, and neither could Amad Diallo spring a surprise. Benjamin Sesko was worked out and later substituted to bolster the frontline with Joshua Zirkee coming on for Manuel Ugarte. Still, it was to no avail.
Jeremy Doku was impactful for City in the first half. His brilliance broke the defense line for Foden to break open the scoring, and again, he assisted with Haaland's goal that set the Citizens ahead by doubling the lead. Spectacular contribution from Haaland, and United have a lot of work to do to bring out the best in their new signings.
