Luiz Junior's Own Goal Ruins Villareal's UCL Opening Game Against Tottenham

Tottenham got off to an impressive start in the UEFA Champions League, securing a 1-0 victory over Villarreal in the opening game at home.

It will be a new era both on and off the pitch for Tottenham as, in what will be Thomas Frank’s maiden league phase of any UEFA competition. Entering as last year’s UEL champions shouldn’t be a hindrance, with eight of the nine previous UEL title-holders getting into the knockout phases of their following UCL campaign.

The goal came off a goalkeeping error. Bergvail darted down the right wing and released a cross to find Richardlison, but Luiz Junior's poor save of the ball in flight bounced off his chest and rolled into the net.

Much of the game was dominated by the Spurs, and Junior's own goal came early enough in the first half to give the hosts the upper hand. The goal was the quickest own goal from a goalkeeper, extending Villarreal's winless run (15) against a Premier League side in the Champions League.
