Liverpool Win Merseyside Derby Against Everton
Liverpool maintained winning run, and retaining the Premier League table lead after they won 2-1 against Everton in a Merseyside derby at Anfield Stadium.
The Reds set the tone from the early stages, and maintained their resilience throughout. Even after Everton pulled one back, they yet come under multiple scares from the Reds. The Blues have now lost back-to-back, and also, it was their third defeat since the season commenced.
Ryan Gravenberch set the Reds in the lead in the 10th minute, finishing off Mo Salah's cross. The lead doubled in goals from Hugo Ekitike's strike. Twenty minutes later, Gravenberch played in the striker inside the box, striking the ball to beat Jordan Pickford.
Shortly after the halftime break, Everton scored their only goal from Idrissa Gueye's long range effort. Jack Grealish's cross set off the build up, landing right for IIiman Ndiaye, he played in Gueye, who smacked the ball from outside the box to beat Allison.
For the past four Premier League games, Liverpool had got to score an injury time goal to win. This time, the had led by two goal before half an hour into the game and went on to win.
Overview
Unlike previous ganes, Liverpool did not leave it late to get ahead. They had the game in the bag already from the first half. Everton proved to be difficult and put the Reds' defense to work occasionally, but they were unable to undo the deficit.
Ekitike had a field day. Replacing him with Alexander Isak in the second half did not weaken the Reds' attack. Rather, Everton stayed in the game because of the brilliant defense job from James Tarkowski in the occasions that Liverpool had glaring chances in front of the goal.
