Liverpool Leave It Late Against Burnley Until Mo Salah's Injury Time Goal Sets Side Apart
Liverpool left it late into injury time before finding the winning goal from a penalty, defeating Burnley by 1-0 at Anfield. Thereby, maintaining the winning run in the Premier League games.
While the Reds continue to rack up results under Arne Slot, Burnley stood up to the challenge from the hosts, despite playing 10-man after Lesly Ugochikwu was dismissed. They were on the brink of securing a goalless draw before they found the needed goal from an effort of a teenage player, Ngumuha Rio.
However, Burnley’s momentum shifted when Lesley Ugochukwu received a second yellow in the 84th minute for a rash tackle on Florian Wirtz. The first yellow, arguably, could have been a red on its own for a high challenge on Alexis Mac Allister earlier in the first half. Wirtz was later substituted with Rio.
In a game crying out for inspiration, it was the teenager, Rio, who turned the tide. Introduced late on, he injected urgency and fearlessness, and ultimately delivered the shot that led to the match-winning penalty. His sharp strike was blocked in the box by Hannibal, leading to the handball offence that gave away the spot kick that Salah buried.
The victory will be Liverpool's fourth consecutive victory by scoring in the latter 10 minutes or injury time. They became the first in the Premier League in the earlier stages of the season, and in their first four games of the season,
Overview
Liverpool were kept at bay for the most part, and Martin Dubravka's good goalkeeping was another effort that kept Burnley in the game. Ekitike was unable to find the right spot to pull off a stunner, and Mo Salah was rigidly put to check.
From Kyle Walker’s no-nonsense defending to Dubravka’s composed goalkeeping, Burnley made the match into a scrap and almost got their reward. It took a red card, an unfortunate handball, and a moment of class from Salah to undo them.
Burbley maintained good composure even after losing Lesly Ugochukwu to a red card offence, despite Arne Slot bolstering his attack by substituting Florian Writz with Rio Ngomuha. It was a hard-fought victory, but commendable for the Reds.
