Jannik Sinner Outlasts Felix Auger-Aliassime, Setting Up US Open Final Against Carlos Alcaraz
Jannik Sinner has made it to his second consecutive US Open final after defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semi-final by 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-4.
The Italian player will be facing Carlos Alcaraz in the final - their second consecutive meeting in a final. However, speaking of his performance against the Canadian, Felix, he was sensational and was in control from the opening set, breaking twice. He faced the strong resistance from Felix in the second round, but recovered in the latter sets.
Felix was playing the US Open semi-final for the second since his first in 2021. He had a tough quarter-final match against Alex de Minaur, whom he outperformed in thrilling four sets by 4-6 7-6(7), 7-5, 7-6(4). Felix losing the match was the Italian's second victory against him,after his first defeat to Jannik in Cincinnati Masters.
Having to defend the US Open against Alcaraz comes with an uphill task for Jannik. In their last encounter in the Cincinnati Masters final, the top seeded player walk over the match due to an injury. However, he had defeated the Spaniard in London, United Kingdom, winning his first Wimbledon title.
Earlier this season, both players met in the Italian Open final. Alcaraz delivered a shocking victory against the home favourite, Jannik. They met again at Roland Garros, Alcaraz outlasted the world number one in a sensational five-set thriller to win the French Open.
As both players head to the final on Sunday, history is at stake for Jannik, who is set to become the first Italian player to win the US Open twice. As for Alcaraz, he is on the quest of winning the championship for the second time following his first in 2022.
