Danny Welbeck Leads Brighton To Comeback Victory Against 10-Man Chelsea
Chelsea endured a comeback defeat to Brighton as Danny Welbeck led the Seagulls to a 3-1 victory in stoppage time at Stamford Bridge.
The loss would be a back-to-back defeat to Chelsea, after their first Premier League defeat of the season against Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend. Yet, they were unable to bounce back at Stamford Bridge, where the west Londoners had been unbeaten in each of their previous 12 home league games.
Enzo Fernandez set Chelsea ahead, nodding home from Reece James' cross in the 24th minute. Soon after the halftime break, Tyrique Chalobah was red-carded for his tackle on Diego Gomez for being the last defender in front of the box.
Brighton leveled in the 77th minute, Welbeck headed home Yankoba Minteh's cross from the left wing. The Seagulls added to goals to the tally in injury time as Maxim De Cuyper nodded into the net Mats Wieffer's header across goal before Welbeck finished off Braja Gruda's pass inside the box.
Brighton’s underwhelming start to the campaign continued after they surrendered to a 2-2 draw with Tottenham in their previous game at the Amex, leaving the Seagulls with a modest haul of five points from five games this season.
Overview
Chelsea had the game in the bag until Chalobah's dismissal. Hence, the Blues' defence struggled, and Brighton capitalized on that. Minteh, playing from the left wing in the second half, effectively opened up Chelsea's defense. It was a brilliant victory for Brighton. However, it stemmed from Chalobah's red card.
