Arsenal Fight Back To Claim Comeback Victory Against Newcastle
Arsenal fought back from behind to claim a comeback victory against Newcastle as they won by 2-1 at St. James' Park, reestablishing their pursuit of the Premier League top spot.
Newcastle were poised for a home victory before the tide turned, losing for the second time in a row in the Premier League. As for the Gunners, they managed they managed to find the right build-up to come back into the game.
The Mapgies took the lead from a set-piece, leading to Nick Woltemade's header just after half an hour. Anthony Gordon's corner found Sandro Tonali, who, in turn, delivered a cross into the six-yard box, rightly landing for Nick's header, beating David Raya to the goal.
With six minutes remaining, Mikel Merino restored Arsenal to the game, nodding home Declan Rice's cross following a corner. Gabriel wrapped up the victory, heading home Martin Odeegard's corner in injury time.
Arsenal have remained unbeaten since losing to Liverpool in August. They resisted defeat against Manchester City, scoring an equalizer in injury time. They have now scored at least one goal in the stoppages in two consecutive Premier League games.
Overview
Arsenal put in a lot of energy from the start, but the opening goal would come from Newcastle. Gordon and Joelinton had been prominent before Nick Woltemade leapt over Gabriel for an aerial advantage for a header. The Magpies were intentional with the set-piece, leading to the goal, and Arsenal's defense was vulnerable.
Newcastle worked out their opponents for much of the second half. Arsenal appeared as if they did not know what to do, having explored both wings and centre to crack the Magpies' resolve in the box. Midway, Mikel Arteta bolstered the attack and the midfield, bringing on Gabriel Martinelli, Mikel Merino, and Martin Odeegard.
Arteta's adjustment paid off, just as their hosts, Arsenal, built up pressure from the left wing, capitalizing on a corner that led to Declan Rice's delivery that landed rightly for Merino. Subsequently, Arsenal gained a better presence in the Magpies' box and seized that to hammer in the second goal. Eventually, Gabriel got his revenge on Newcastle. Earlier, he accused Nick of infringement, leading to Newcastle's opening goal.
