Paris Saint-Germains Win UEFA Super Cup, Beating Tottenham With Stoppage Time Comeback
Paris Saint-Germain are the winners of the UEFA Super Cup, with a late comeback that cancelled out Tottenham's lead and won 5-4 on penalties.
The Parisians are the champions of the UEFA Champions League, but lost their last encounter with Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup. They had trailed by a two-goal deficit until the 80th minute when they equalised with nine minutes left to go.
Tottenham took the lead from a corner whipped in with pace, created chaos in the PSG box, and the ball fell to Micky van de Ven, who smashed it home from close range. After the halftime break, they doubled the lead from a deep free-kick that found Cristian Romero lurking at the back post. He leaped above an opponent and powered a header past Lucas Chevalier.
The match seemed to be heading for a straightforward Tottenham victory before the Parisians bounced back in the 85th minute. Lee Kang-in unleashed a powerful low shot into the bottom corner, and Ousmane Dembele facilitated the equaliser, flicking a cross into the six-yard box, for Gonçalo Ramos' header.
PSG’s shooters Ramos, Lee, Vitinha, Marquinhos, and Hakimi executed their kicks with poise. On the other hand, Tottenham missed two spot kicks, including Pedro Porro’s attempt that was saved by Chevalier.
Overview
Tottenham pressed PSG high up the pitch, disrupting their rhythm in the first 20 minutes. Mohamed Kudus was particularly lively on the right, combining well with Pedro Porro to keep Nuno Mendes on his toes.
Tottenham let the game slip out of their reach, allowing their opponents too deep into their half after an impressive performance in the earlier stages. While the Spurs capitalized on set pieces, the Parisians made up for their earlier shoddy defensive outlook, with contributions from Dembele, who was inspirational to the team.
