Manchester United Breaks Winless Run, Narrowly Defeat Burnley At Old Trafford
Manchester United broke their winless misery at the start of the Premier League season, with a 3-2 victory, as they welcome newly-promoted Burnley to Old Trafford.
Manchester United snapped the winless run through three consecutive games, with a comeback victory to win against Burnley by 3-2 at Old Trafford and their first Premier League victory this season.
United had the better of the first half, taking the lead from Josh Cullen's own goal. The hosts found themselves having to fight back after Burnley's equaliser until Bruno Fernandez's spot-kick set them apart.
Midway of the first half, Mason Mount's cross set up Casemiro for a header, and Cullen deflected Dubravka's rebound save into the net. After the halftime break, Bruun Larsen's cross was rifled home by Foster, bringing the game to level terms.
Bryan Mbeumo restored United in the lead, finishing out Dalot's cutback from the left wing. The Clarets restored level terms again, as Kyle Walker's throw-in led to a rebound shot saved to the reach of Anthony, who finished off the chance from inside the box.
As the game drew to a close in injury time, Amad Diallo was dropped inside the box, and a penalty was awarded for United. Bruno Fernandes converted the spot-kick and United won. It ended as United's first Premier League victory after two previous winless games.
Overview
United turned what could have been a humiliating draw, even for manager Ruben Amorim, into a victory. Earlier this week, they were eliminated from the EFL Carabao Cup in the opening stages by Grimsby Town. However, they brought a different attitude to the game, despite Mattheus Cunha's early substitution due to an injury.
The hosts saw a different Burnley in the second half, with brilliant build-ups leading up to the Clarets' equaliser. United had brilliant chances in the first half to have put the game to bed, but Dubravka's goalkeeping efforts were good enough to keep the side in the game, nonetheless.
However, United, resilient on their own turf, took advantage of the last-minute dissent from the visitor with an unstoppable penalty by Bruno Fernandes, who won the battle of wills.
