Novak Djokovic Knockouts Alexander Zverev To Reach Semi-final
Alexander Zverev will for the second season in a row, miss out on winning his first Grand Slam title in Roland Garros after his elimination from the French Open in the quarterfinal by Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic recovered from a set deficit to outlast Zverev in four sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 at Court Philippe-Chatrier. Besides the break point he won in the first set, Djokovic saved every other break opportunity he had and dominated the remaining sets. It was a disappointing loss to the German since their last meeting in Melbourne, Australia in January.
Zverev's optimistic start was dismantled by Serbian's resilience coupled with drop shots. Meanwhile, Djokovic reacted swiftly to the net and won more in net points than the German. The sixth seed served 28 winners and committed 19 unforced errors.
Until quarterfinal, Djokovic had not lost a set in previous rounds - he eliminated British favourite, Cameron Norrie in the fourth round. Having reached semi-finals, the three-time champion stands to extend his Grand Slam to 25, new career milestone of 25, that would make him the all-time highest winner in men's singles tennis.
Djokovic is set to meet Jannuk Sinner in the semi-final in their third meeting since last year - Australian Open and Shanghai Masters. The Italian top seed defeated Djokovic back-to-back last season and is bidding for his second Grand Slam title of the year.
