HSBC Championship: Jack Draper Gets Perfect Start With Jenson Brooksby Defeat In Opening Round
Jack Draper claimed a sensational start to the HSBC (Queen's Club) Championship, with straight sets defeat of Jenson Brooksby in the opening rounds.
The British player routed his opponent in two sets, 6-3, 6-1, winning four break advantages while the American barely could convert an advantage. Meanwhile, he later confessed that had to play through the pains he sustained from the fall he had from his training session.
"I was training on the courts here and took a really heavy fall," said Draper. "I was limping around for a day or so, but it wasn't anything that was going to keep me from playing."
The 23-year-old won his first Masters 1000 title at the Indian Wells, in straight set defeat of Holger Rune for his first major singles title of the season. Last year, he won his first tour-level title in Stuttgart Open.
Draper participated in the French Open but was eliminated in the fourth round by Alexander Bublik in four sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. He will face Alexei Popyrin in the next round.
