How to Train Your Dragon Maintains Box Office Dominance In Second Weekend
How to Train Your Dragon remained a blockbuster film at the box office for the second weekend, even though it took a 56.3% drop in gross. In the domestic market, it outperformed newly-released films like 28 Years Later and Elios, and internationally, the DreamWorks animation franchise has crossed the $300 million milestone.
The live-action animation film overtook the top position from Lilo & Stitch, which had dominated the chart for three weeks. It grossed $37 million, increasing its worldwide gross to $358.2 million. However, for Elios, the opening weekend fell below expectations compared to its budget.
Elios grossed $21 million domestically, and in the international market, it did not meet expectations, grossing $35 million. It was third at the box office behind 28 Years Later, which grossed $30 million in its first weekend.
The argument for Elios was that it cost $150 million to produce, and that was not including the cost of marketing globally. It was not satisfactory compared to its predecessor from the same studio, Inside Out 2, which opened at the global box office with $295 million.
Meanwhile, the British zombie film, 28 Years Later, was second on the chart, grossing $60 million compared to its 2002 classic, which grossed $10 million in its initial opening weekend. In comparison, the new release is more successful than its predecessor, which had a moderate budget of $8 million and grossed $78 million at the global box office.
Domestically, Lilo & Stitch has dropped to fourth with $9.7 million, but globally, the film's success is phenomenal. While its domestic gross slows down, in the international market, it increased its earnings to $524 million, bringing its global gross to $911.1 million. If it continues to perform impressively, it stands to overtake A Minecraft Movie to become the highest-grossing film behind Ne Zha 2.
