Carlos Alcaraz Sets Up French Open Final Showdown Against Jannik Sinner as Lorenzo Musetti, Novak Djokovic Are Eliminated
Carlos Alcaraz has set up a final showdown against Jannik Sinner as he seeks to defend the French Open title for the second consecutive season at Court Philippe-Chatrier on Sunday.
The defending champion fought back from a set down to defeat Lotenzo Musetti in four sets 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-0, 2-0 in the semi-finals. The Italian player retired in the fourth set. However, he started impressively in the opener and was in the lead in the second before Alcaraz rallied to force a tiebreak and won.
Musetti was clearly outperformed in the third as Alcaraz converted three break points for a clean set win. He was expressly perplexed in the third as he won his sixth break point. Musetti had played through the previous three rounds in four sets, eliminating American player Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals.
"This match is one of the best match-ups we have in tennis right now," said Alcaraz. "It's going to be great tennis. As a huge fan of tennis. I'm going to watch it, I'm going to enjoy it. Of course, I'm going to take tactics from the match."
In a separate match, Jannik defeated Djokovic in three sets, 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(3) and denied the three-time champion a chance of winning his 101st tour-level title. Both players met last season at the Australian Open and Shanghai Masters finals, both of which Jannik won.
