Tyla Wins AMA Award Over Burna Boy, Others

 

Billie Eilish was the biggest winner at the 2025 American Music Awards with seven prizes, amongst which were Favourite Female Pop Artist and Album of the Year for her new album, "Hit Me Hard and Soft". However, in the Afrobeats category, South African music sensation Tyla won the award over other contenders from Nigeria. 

Tyla became the first South African and female artist to win an award in the category since its introduction in 2022. At this year's Grammys, she beat contenders like Burna Boy and Davido to win Best African Music Performance for her song, Water.

Amongst Nigerian artists nominated in the Favourite Afrobeats Artist category were Burna Boy, Tems, Wizkid, and Rema. Meanwhile, Tyla received two nods for Favourite R&B artist and Favourite Afrobeats Artist. 

Wizkid was the first African Artist to win the Favourite Afrobeats Artist when it was introduced in 2022. The Nigerian sensation received the award on the backdrop of his hit song, Essence.
