Tottenham End Title-Drought, Beating Manchester United To Lift UEFA Europa League Trophy

Tottenham lift their first major competition trophy since 1984, beating Manchester United by 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final

Tottenham have won their first major trophy since 1984, beating Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final. They are now guaranteed a slot for the UEFA Champions League next season.

While Manchester United controlled the ball for most of the game, Tottenham's defense stood strong, with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven stepping up when it mattered most.

Tottenham secured the goal that eventually would be the decider when Wan-Bissaka's cross from the left, rightly arrived for Brennan Johnson's tap-in, instead it ricocheted off Luke Shaw and rolled into the left corner of the goal.

United later had a couple of glaring chances, including Van de Ven's touchline clearance of Ramus Holjund's header. Bruno Fernandez followed with a glancing header that narrowly missed the goal.

Despite United's relentless attempts in the closing minutes, they couldn't crack Tottenham's defense. Casemiro's bicycle kick narrowly missed the net. Tottenham could not have had it better. They emerged as the new UEFA Europa League champions.

Tottenham have never won a major European competition trophy in four decades, or any in the English domestic league recently. The farthest they have gone in the Premier League is as runners-up in 2016/17 under former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

United were contending for the silverware for the second time in the final after winning the trophy for the first time under former manager Jose Mourinho in 2016/17. The Spurs became winners of a major European competition (UEFA Cup/Europa League) for the third time - 1972, 1984, and 2025.

Overview

While Tottenham maintained resilience in the midfield, United explored the wings. Dorgu's overlapping on the left while Diallo charged in from the right gave United the needed pace to break deeper into their opponents' half. Johnson had made occasional threats in United's box, likewise Richardlison, before getting the goal from a moment of loose defending from Luke Shaw.

Ruben Amorim boosted the United attack, bringing on Joshua Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho. The change was impactful, and the Spurs remained resilient,
