Sinners Wins Big But Upset By Newly-Released Film At Box Office

Sinners maintained its big money-making streak, but not for the most gross at the box office in its third weekend. There is a new chart-topping film, even though Ryan Coogler's film has topped the $200 million benchmark globally. A newly-released film, Thunderbolts, overtook Warner Bros's to top the box office over the weekend.

As the title implies, Thunderbolts took the box office by storm on its opening weekend. Globally, it has already surpassed the hundred-million-dollar benchmark, earning $182 million worldwide, including a domestic gross of $76 million. China, Australia, and Canada contributed most of the money from international territories. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, Minecraft topped the country's chart for the weekend.

However, all three aforementioned films topped the chart over the weekend. Sinners maintained a strong box office presence in second place by earning $33 million domestically, extending its cume in the North American market to $179.7 million. It is edging closer to surpassing the quarter-of-a-billion benchmark globally, with its ticket sales currently at $236.7 million.

In the third place is A Minecraft Movie, which reclaimed the top five ranking by earning $13.7 million in its fifth weekend. It added $26.6 million from foreign territories to increase its international gross to $475.2 million. Minecraft is now nearing the billion-dollar mark with its global cume at $873.4 million. The animation remake is still the second most successful film of the year after the Chinese film Ne Zha 2.

The Accountant 2 made a solo presence in fourth place with $9.49 million, with a 61% drop in ticket sales from its second weekend. Ben Affleck's film took the biggest drop in sales, more than the previous two films (Sinners, 28%, and Minecraft, 41%). Yet, it is Amazon MGM's second-biggest gross for a movie in its second weekend this year.
