Brentford Neatly Defeat Manchester United Despite Comeback Effort

Kevin Schade scores a brace as Brentford defeat Manchester United in the Premier League

Manchester United had a difficult day at Brentford, where they lost to the hosts by 4-3. The Red Devils' winless run rolled into its sixth consecutive game in the Premier League.

United's starting lineup was moderate, with key players like Bruno Fernandez and Casemiro ruled out, which left the hosts with an opportunity to capitalize on the situation. The manager attempted to fix the loopholes by bringing on Harry Maguire to reinforce the defence and Christian Eriksen to fire up the midfield. It was late, considering the margin by which Brentford led.

Alejandro Garnacho set up the moment for the opening goal, squaring up a cut-back with Mason Mount, who tapped home the ball from close range. Brentford reclaimed level terms as Damgaard's goal-bound shot was deflected in by Luke Shaw, following Michael Kayode's throw-in.

Brentford added a second goal from Kevin Schade's header following Norgaard's cross from the right flank. Schade scored his second goal for Brentford's third in the second half, nodding home Mbeumo's cross from the right flank. The host secured the game with the fourth goal, breaking through United's centre defense with a through pass from Jensen for Kayode to latch onto and square a pass with Yoane Wissa, who tapped in the ball from close range.

Garnacho struck a brilliant 18-yard shot to beat Flekken to the goal, and Diallo darted through Brentford's defense, striking a shot through to the net for United's third goal with three minutes left. Both goals ended as a consolation as United could not complete the comeback.

The victory extended Brentford's winning run to three consecutive Premier League games, their longest since 2023. They are ninth in the table in a season with their highest number of Premier League game wins (15).

Overview

Brentford seized a set piece to turnaround the game while United's defense was taking advantage of. The Red Devils' midfield was outpaced by their hosts in the latter stages of the first half, particularly from the right flank, where both Brentford's goal ensued. Kayode was a problem for United's defense, overlapping on the right wing to provide the attack with an assist.

United's effort to make a comeback and compensate for their deficit did not go down well. The midfield was untidy and the defense was yet tarky, allowing room for penetrations that resulted in goals. Wissa's goal exposed the loopholes in the defense, even though changes had been made to fix those loopholes.
