Mohamed Salah Signs New Contract, What Do Liverpool Stand To Get From The Player?

Mohamed Salah celebrates his goal-scoring

Mohamed Salah renewed his contract for two more years with Liverpool, who are coasting towards lifting the Premier League title. As things stand, the Reds are conveniently on course to come out of the season as the champions.

However, what makes Salah essential to the club? Most clubs are reluctant to extend the contract of older players beyond two years, and for the Egyptian forward, this new deal is within that range. Initially, there were speculations that the player would move to the Saudi Arabian Pro League upon the expiration of his contract. Eventually, that did not happen.

It could not have happened in the case of Salah. He is a key player at Liverpool, maintaining a form that makes him prominent in the squad. He leads in goalscoring with 27 goals in the Premier League. Adding the three goals from other competitions (Champions League) puts his total at 30 goals. For a 32-year-old player, that is an incredible form.

As it is presently at Liverpool, there are not many replacements to fill in the gaps should he leave the club in the summer. Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott often replace him. However, in terms of effectiveness, he would not produce the quality of attacking football that Salah brings, and his ability to salvage a hard-fought game is evident in scoring and assists.

"Of course I'm very excited," said Salah. "Before we also had a great team. But, I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy football."

It is to the best of the team and for Arne Slot to keep the forward. Already they have this season in the bag, retaining him will maintain the team structure, particularly at the front. The new contract reportedly did not come with a pay cut, and he stands to earn as much as £400,000-a-week from the deal.
