Minecraft Continues Box Office Dominance In Second Week
Warner Bros' 'A Minecraft Movie' is not slowing down at the box office, maintaining its performance from its opening weekend to top the domestic market for the second week. Besides that, it is paying back the studio for some recent flops. Warner's recently released Mickey 17 failed to make the impression that commiserated with the studio's budget. However, Minecraft has surpassed the half-a-billion-dollar milestone in global gross, thereby making up for the lapses left by its predecessors.
After hauling in $78.5 million domestically to top the weekend, Minecraft continued its resounding grossing performance in its second weekend, though its ticket sales had dropped by 52%. Globally, it has made over $550 million, making it the second most successful film of the year after the Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2.
Though the film is a video game adaptation, Minecraft has surpassed every expectation of the studios. A film that centers upon four misfits slipping into the underworld and their resolve to return home. With a budget of $150 million, it is not only a Warner success but also one of the biggest adaptation films ever released.
However, there were other impressive debuts over the weekend, including The King of Kings, which hauled in $19.3 million. The story is based on the biblical figure known as Jesus Christ. The film has performed better than its predecessors, which are based on biblical stories such as The Prince of Egypt, Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie, and the most recent, The Chosen: Last Supper.
Another top performer over the weekend was 20th Century's The Amateur with $14.8 million. Starring Rami Malek in the lead role as the CIA agent who set out to avenge the death of his wife.
