Manchester United Share Spoils With Lyon

 

Lyon fought back to secure a 2-2 draw against Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League quarterfinal first leg tie. 

Lyon began the match strongly, with Thiago Almada and Rayan Cherki causing problems for Manchester United's defense. Their pressure paid off when Almada scored a stunning goal just before half an hour.

Leny Yoro's stunning equalizer in the 45+5th minute, nodding a Manuel Ugarte's volley into the net following a free kick. Joshua Zirkzee doubled the lead, nodding home Bruno Fernandez's cross. 

Rayan Cherki's stunning goal in injury time earned Lyon a crucial point. The French midfielder's vision and skill had finally broken down Manchester United's defense, completing their comeback. 

Manchester United responded well to the setback, with Bruno Fernandes creating several chances for his teammates. Rasmus Hojlund had a golden opportunity to equalize earlier, but his shot across goal was mishit and wide.

United maintained an unbeaten run in the competition through 11 games. They won the silverware in 2016/17 - their most recent UEFA competition title - under former manager Erik ten Hag.
