Manchester City Shrug Off Everton To Take Leap To Top Four

Nico O'Reily celebrates his goal for Manchester City against Evertom
Manchester City seized the maximum points from a 2-0 defeat of Everton at Goodison Park Stadium to reclaim the top-four position.

It was tough for City from the start, yet Everton were formidable and came close to netting a goal even as City dictated possession. The half was goalless, and there were multiple chances for both sides to take the lead.

Everton held the game goalless until the latter stages as the match ticked into its final ten minutes, and Nico O’Reilly rose to the occasion. The youngster, fed by Matheus Nunes inside the box, showed poise beyond his years to calmly slot home from close range in the 84th minute. The breakthrough deflated the Everton defense and gave City the desperately needed edge.

City weren’t done. Just three minutes into stoppage time, Ilkay Gündogan laid the ball off to Kovačić on the edge of the box. Despite slipping, the Croatian sent a rocket into the bottom-left corner, leaving Pickford with no chance and putting the game to bed at 0-2.

The victory extended City's unbeaten run to 16 in previous games against Everton, and they are fourth by just a point ahead of Nottingham Forest in the EPL standings.

Overview

From the very first whistle, City took control of the possession, pushing Everton deep into their own half. Yet, the Toffees were roared on by a fiery home crowd that held firm, absorbing the pressure and growing into the game. The opening half was a test of nerves and patience, with both teams struggling to convert chances into a breakthrough.

Manchester City eventually proved why they remain a relentless force under Pep Guardiola, striking twice in the dying moments to secure a crucial victory. Everton were defiant from the start, even nearly netting a goal from Tarkowski's header in the first half.

Kevin de Bruyne's influence was plausible, though he did not score. However, having Doku to replace Savio reinforced the attacking forward. He was involved in the buildup to Kovacic's goal.
