Carlos Alcaraz Edges Past Laslo Djere To Reach Barcelona Open QF
Carlos Alcaraz has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Barcelona Open after sensationally defeating Laslo Djere in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
The Spaniard won his first Monte Carlo Masters title over the weekend. He is now on course to contend for his third Barcelona Open title after winning his last in 2023.
Djere easily dropped the opening set, but in the decider, he was on a rally to win. He saved a break advantage and claimed his only break at 3-2 of the second set before Alcaraz rallied to win four straight games, breaking twice en route to claiming a match point.
"I think I played great tennis, even better than the first round, even though I had to come back from 4-2 in the second set. I think he played much better in that second set, but really happy to find a great level again and hopefully keep going."
Since his last appearance on the Barcelona clay-court in 2023, Alcaraz has remained unbeaten, improving to 12-0 at the tournament. Alcaraz missed out on the 2024 edition of the ATP 500 tournament due to injury.
He will face Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinal. The Australian met the two-time champion in the semi-final of the 2022 edition and lost in three sets.
