Harvey Elliot Set Liverpool Ahead As PSG Lose R16 First-Leg Despite Dominance
Paris Saint-Germain disappointingly lost an important game after they had dominated Liverpool in every aspect of the game. Ultimately, they lost 0-1 to the Reds in the UCL round of 16 first-leg tie.
Despite enjoying 68% of possession and creating numerous scoring chances, PSG could not find the back of the net. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was instrumental in the win, making several crucial saves to deny PSG's attacking threats.
The match was a tale of two teams of PSG's attacking prowess on full display, but their finishing was lacking. The Reds, on the other hand, were content to absorb pressure and counter-attack, a strategy that ultimately paid off.
Alisson set off a counter-attack by lobbing a long-range pass deep into PSG, which Darwin Nunez rightly received and played in Harvey Elliott who curled a left shot into the net.
The victory was marginal but essential to give Liverpool a fair headstart to the round of 16. Liverpool will host the French at Anfield for the second-leg tie that will determine their fate in the competition.
Overview
Impressive start from the Ligue 1, pressing deep into Liverpool's half and causing considerable scares. Should any side have taken the lead from the first half that should have been PSG. Allison made some great saves but the French side should have taken the lead from Kvaratskhelia's individual brilliance. VAR ruled out the goal but that was marginal.
PSG appeared unfamiliar with the Reds' long-range ball to take down tough opposition. They paid dearly for not making most of the chances they had even as Liverpool defended strongly. They became less enterprising, apparently hoping to take a draw from the game. Arne Slot had a different plan and Elliot replaced Mo Salah to get the job done.
