Bayer Leverkusen Take Break From Unbeaten Run As Dealt By Bayern Munich

It was a game between familiar contenders, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich were no stranger to each other. They both locked horns in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg tie at Allianz Arena on Wednesday night. One factor was at stack besides winning, both sides have been unbeaten for a considerable number of games.

Bayern played confidently on the back of a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions - they came from a goal down to defeat Stuttgart 3-1 on Friday, making it a back-to-back win. By the way, they scraped past Celtic in the UCL knockout playoffs with a last-minute goal from Davies to win on aggregate.

Unlike Bayern, Leverkusen were strong enough to finish in the top eight of the league phase. Xabi Alonso’s side are also unbeaten in eight matches across all competitions. but have concerningly lost their last two UCL away matches against Atlético Madrid and Liverpool - form that is in stark contrast to their 29-match run without defeat in the Bundesliga away matches.

Having hosted Leverkusen in three previous encounters in all competitions, experience was on the side of Vincent Kompany's men, leading to an intriguing victory by 3-0. Harry Kane contributed a brace to the scoresheet amongst which was a penalty.

Harry's first goal came in the ninth minute, nodding home Michael Olise's cross from the right wing. The second goal was later in the second half from a penalty. Though Musiala's goal was in between his, Leverkusen's defense was to blame on both occasions, for poor defending that allowed Musiala to tap-in the ball in between them.

It took Bayern seven games to secure their first victory playing against Leverkusen - in their six previous meetings, they drew three and lost three. Both sides drew goalless in their last game in the Bundesliga.
