Marco Asensio Leads Aston Villa To Comeback Victory Against Chelsea

Aston Villa seized a delightful second-half comeback to undo Chelsea's lead and won by 2-1. Marco Asensio contributed both goals to lead the side through.

Chelsea were unbeaten across their last four visits to Villa Park, with all three wins by two-goal margins. But they could not repeat the feats at Villa Park, with Marco Asensio's bounce-back victory for the host in the second half.

Enzo Fernandez's tap-in set the Blue ahead in the first quarter. Neto latched on the ball into the right flank and squared up with Fernandez, who rightly met the ball with a tap-in in front of the net. Asensio leveled the scores for Villa near an hour of play, tapping in from close range Marcus Rashford's cut-back.

With the game heading into the stoppages, Asensio sent Villa into the lead as Rashford's cross reached him for a tap-in that went through the crowded box to beat Martinez to the goal.

The victory is crucial to Villa after their 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the midweek game and their fourth draw in five Premier League matches. Now trailing their visitors by one point, with the victory against the Blues, Villa moved closer to qualifying for European competition next term as they are inside the top half of the table.

Overview

Though an energetic game, it was less enterprising and Villa could barely find their rhythm for much of the first half. Rashford brought some energy into the game and opened the left flank for his penetrations culminating in both goals. The goals were controversial but Chelsea were a bit distraught following Moises Calceido's disputing the referee's yellow card. It was not the best performance from Chelsea and Villa rightly won the game.
