Liverpool Edge Wolves In Thrilling Encounter
Tough as it might have seemed, Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield Stadium, extending their table dominance by seven points.
Wolves have an uphill task of staying clear of the relegation zone following the defeat that dropped the side to 17th of the table. They have only won one of their previous five Premier League games, and with the loss to Liverpool, the challenge to stay afloat gets compounded.
The Reds dominated the early proceedings, with Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah causing problems for the Wolves defense. Diaz opened the scoring in the 16th minute, bundling the ball past Jose Sa after a Salah shot was deflected into his path.
Salah doubled Liverpool's lead from the penalty spot in the 37th minute, sending Sa the wrong way with a stuttering run-up. However, the Wolves goalkeeper was fortunate not to concede a third goal before halftime, as Liverpool's attacking trio of Diaz, Salah, and Diogo Jota continued to threaten.
Wolves improved significantly in the second half, with Matheus Cunha pulling a goal back in the 67th minute with a stunning curled finish. The Brazilian forward's strike sparked a tense finale, with Wolves pushing for an equalizer that would have reignited the title race.
However, Liverpool's defense held firm, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate and later on Quansha repelling Wolves' attacks. The Reds saw out the remaining minutes to secure a vital victory and maintained their grip on the Premier League title.
While Wolves are in a precarious situation, Liverpool extended its winning streak to 30 in 40 previous games in all competitions. More so, they now lead the table by 60 points.
Overview
Wolves were neatly taken advantage of at the back needless to say the opposition's defense was tarky and loosened enough for the hosts to penetrate. The build-ups to the goals from the first half exposed the loopholes exercised by Wolves, particularly via Agbadou.
Liverpool's tackles were rightly orchestrated and moved fast, but the earlier stages of the second half witnessed fewer of those, leading to Cunha's moment. Though the Reds committed enough men in the defense, Bellegarde rightly played Cunha in scoring range. Cunha was a big problem for the Reds, He nearly set off an equalizer for facilitating a break-in that Quansha blocked in front of the goal.
