Tottenham Limit Liverpool in Carabao Cup First-Leg
Tottenham host Liverpool in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with both teams hoping to gain an advantage over the other ahead of next month’s return fixture.
Liverpool fought hard to get ahead but Lucas Bergval settled the game for the Spurs, tapping into the net a Dominic Solanke's cut-back from inside the box. The goal was enough to keep Tottenham through the game with four minutes remaining.
Dominic Solanke has scored a lovely goal to keep the Spurs gestures up, which the referee duly disallowed for offside. Solanke, on latching for an aerial lob, had drifted into offside by a margin. The goal, however, was superb.
The Reds, in contrast, played with good intelligent players, who confidently hope to follow up the 6-3 success they enjoyed at the Spurs' home in the Premier League last month. Spurs were desperately in need of a success story after a run of four matches without a win including a 6-3 defeat to Liverpool in the Premier.
Liverpool, meanwhile, hope to move one step closer to securing a trophy since replacing Jurgen Klopp in the summer. The Reds look on course to lift the Premier League at the end of the season despite a 2-2 draw with Man U and are performing strongly in the Champions League.; But could not get a victory over Spurs with all intensive display,
Overview
Lucas Bergvall is the youngest player to score for Tottenham in the League Cup since Gareth Gale in 2007. However, his goal capped Spurs' many attempts in the hard-fought game.
Liverpool gave it their all, feeding Mo Salah on the right wing with enough balls to pull the side ahead. Neither he nor Diogo Jota on the left could get past Spurs' staunch defense. Luis Diaz could not connect rightly to the ball from Salah, making burrowing into the Spurs' 18-yard box ineffectively.
Nevertheless, Tottenham deserved the applause. Solanke narrowly drifted into the offside, hence his goal cancellation. In the end, the right winners emerged from Lucas' goal. They will now meet again next month for the second-leg.
