Arsenal Extend Winning Run Against Tottenham After Winning Thrilling North London Derby
Arsenal claimed much-needed victory from the North London derby against Tottenham, winning 2-1 and moving to second place behind front-runners. Liverpool.
The victory was the Gunners' third successive derby win in the Premier League, restoring the side to winning form after two winless games in the EFL Carabao Cup and the FA Cup respectively. However, having to beat Tottenham took a level of commanding control of the game and they did a good job of retaining the lead to the end.
Heung-min Son set the pace of the game for Tottenham when he seized a moment from a delivery to strike a low-cut shot past David Raya for the opening goal. Arsenal restored level terms as Gabriel pounced home a header following Declan Rice's corner. The winning goal followed as Martin Odegaard's pass set off Leandro Trossard to strike an 18-yard shot into the net.
Tottenham were knocked out of the FA Cup by Tamworth and having to lose to Arsenal extended their winless run to five successive games in the Premier League. In addition, Arsenal extended their unbeaten home run against Tottenham by winning the derby.
Overview
Arsenal gradually garnered pace and strength to restore level terms and lead. The Gunners maintained their good understanding of set pieces to their advantage. Trossard's goal put more logs in the fire, giving Arsenal the spark to dominate the final pieces of the first half.
Since the derby seemed as such that was destined for more goals, the second half took a different tune with Sterling steering the offensive from the left flank as the Spurs were pushed deep into their half. Even as the scoreline stayed the same, the Spurs pounced on their defense but were resisted by Gabriel and Lewis-Skelly, with threats from Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro.
