Salah, Diaz Net Twice As Liverpool Thrashed Tottenham In Nine-Goal Thriller

Liverpool maintained its winning run on the road to Tottenham and refuted a late comeback from the hosts to win by a whopping 6-3. They remained atop the table by a fair margin having won the game.

The Reds did not leave the game for too long before surging ahead of the Spurs, with Luiz Diaz and Mohamed Salah contributing a brace to the scoresheet. Tottenham had to fight to no avail after halftime because Liverpool extended the margin to consolidate the lead.

Diaz opened the scoresheet with a glancing header to Trent Alexandre Arnold's cross. Then Alexis Mac-Alister doubled the lead before James Maddison seized a moment of defensive flop to pull one back for the Spurs. Unfortunately for the Spurs, Salah seized a counter to set off Dominik Szoboszlai to score the third.

Liverpool drifted further with Salah adding the fourth goal to the scoresheet before scoring the fifth goal - Szoboszlai assisted in the build-up to both goals. Tottenham managed to narrow the lead by scoring twice through Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke but they fell further as Diaz slid to finish off Salah's through pass following a fast break.

The nine-goal thriller is the highest margin between the two teams in over six decades, effectively consolidating the Reds as the title race leaders. In addition, Liverpool have not conceded a Premier League game since September.

Overview

Tottenham's regular technique of playing fast and deep did not pay off with Liverpool. The Reds played wide through the wings and found the counters that quickly sent them ahead, catching the Spurs loosened enough to strike goals.

With pacey players in the Reds' frontline, the hosts were neatly taken down on the counter as they searched for an equalizer after Maddison struck his goal. However, the Reds were under pressure as the Spurs played deeper into their halve but Alexander-Arnold's cross-field clearance shelved the pressure and sparked a counter for Szoboszlai to finish off.

Credit to Luis Diaz for setting the side ahead and completing the scoresheet. However, Liverpool scored most of their goals from a counter; Salah's brace was from fast breaks. The Egyptian forward was significant to the day's success and likewise, Szoboszlai was prominent coming through the center.
