Liverpool Dominant Display, Victory At Anfield Setback Manchester City In Title Race
Liverpool secured a dominant 2-0 win over Manchester City at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo scoring the goals that sent the Reds nine points clear of second-placed Arsenal and 11 ahead of defending champions Manchester City.
The hosts were in control from the outset, with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also impressing in a dominant display. Liverpool ran Manchester City's defence ragged and put the test goalkeeper Stefan Ortega at every opportunity.
After a brief moments of early offence from the Reds, Salah stoled the show, fizzed in a tantalising pass and Gakpo was on hand to tap home and give Liverpool the lead. Salah settled the game in the latter stages of the game, converting the penalty Luis Diaz drew following Ortega's foul.
Virgil van Dijk was a whisker away from giving the Reds the lead in the 12th minute, only for his header to crash against the post and away to safety. With Arne Slot's side currently sitting in position, they will be eager to build on this momentum and maintain their push for the title.
Pep Guardiola and his City men are getting shattered as their winless run continues to deal blows to their Premier League title defence. City have gone seven consecutive game in the Premier League without a win. They also have lost four successive games in the Premier League sending the side down to fifth of the table and 11 points behind the summit.
Overview
Gakpo was the standout performer for Liverpool, scoring the opening goal and showing great pace and driving runs in an excellent display. Salah also impressed, bagging another delightful assist to set up Gakpo and scoring the second goal from the penalty spot. Virgil van Dijk, as he often would, was prominent in the set piece set pieces - he was near set the side ahead much earlier before Gakpo's.
