Aston Villa Claim Stunning Victory Against Manchester City
Aston Villa pulled off a stunning 2-1 win over reigning champions Manchester City at Villa Park, which further set the Citizens back in the quest to stay in the Premier League title contest.
With credits to goals from Jhon Duran and Morgan Rogers in each half, the victory lifts Villa to fifth place in the Premier League standings, while City's woeful run continues with their ninth loss in 12 matches.
Villa taking the lead through Duran's well-worked goal following a fast break led by Rogers. The home side maintained their lead until halftime, despite City's dominance in possession and doubled the goals. Rogers led a counter from half of the field, did a one-two pass with McaGinn to latch onto his pass and neatly finished the ball from inside the box. Phil Foden pulled a goal back for City in the injury time. That proved to be a consolation on full time.
As City's winless run continues to worsen, Villa leapt to the fifth position and the victory marked a back-to-back home win against the Citizens in a league game.
Overview
Aston Villa neatly outperformed the Citizens, leaving all their key players not effective. Erling Haaland found the hosts' defense hard to penetrate and Phil Foden could not make significant impact to stir up the attack until the injury time. Initially, Jack Grealish played a significant role at the front but his impact was quelled by the defense.
Roger played a significant role at ensuring Villa kept the lead and dominance to the end. His role in the midfield apparently made the game difficult for the Citizens. Villa kept ball possession much longer than their opponents and their passes were effective, that the City's defense was loosened enough to concede goals.
