Amad Diallo's Late Stunner Takes Manchester United Through Manchester Derby Against City
Manchester United pulled off a stunning late comeback to defeat Manchester City 2-1 in a thrilling derby clash at the Etihad Stadium, with United coming from behind to win from Amad Diallo's thrilling goal in the latter stages.
Difficult as the game might have seemed from the earlier stages, City took the lead in the 35th minute through Josko Gvardiol's header from Kevin de Bruyne's corner. United later leveled up by scoring from a penalty drawn from Nunez's tackle on Amad. Bruno Fernandez stepped up to convert the spot kick, sending Ederson diving wide as he guided home the ball for the equalizer.
United eventually found the lifeline to victory from Lautaro Martinez's lob, which he latched onto and brilliantly beat on rushing Ederson to the ball, where he guided a side-footed shot home from a difficult angle.
The Citizens lost their previous game to Crystal Palace and by adding today's defeat to their winless run, they have now lost six in seven Premier League games. Having to lose to United after leading from the first half will be their first since 2021.
United continue to fare better under Ruben Amorim and have regained winning form after losing back-to-back in the Premier League. With the maximum points gained from the victory, they have now consolidated their position in 13th place with 22 points.
Overview
United were much better than what they used to be, though they were initially tacky at the front. A moment of loose defending gave Gvardiol the opening goal from a set-piece. Nevertheless, they were the better side.
Diallo Amad showed great competence with the ball but he needs to improve his finishing skills. However, he established himself as effective at the front by scoring a delightful winning goal. As for Rasmus Holjund, he had a difficult game and he barely could find space to cause a scare. Eventually, Fernandez's penalty was complimentary to bringing the Red Devils back into the game.
As for the Citizens, it was another disappointing game, smeared with a weak offensive approach. Erling Haaland had a difficult day and Phil Foden's impact gradually fizzled out. Plausible game to Kevin de Bruyne for his goalscoring assist but that could not be enough against a revamped United.
Performance
Amad Diallo was the prominent player for United, scoring the dramatic winner and causing problems for the City defense throughout the match. Bruno Fernandes was also impressive for United, scoring the equalizer from the spot and creating several chances. Likewise, credit to Gvardiol for sending the Citizens ahead in the first half.
