Monaco GP Gets Formula One Contract Extension, New Date
Monaco Grand Prix has finalised deal with Formula One on its contract extension, and now, the new deal signed on Thursday will run until 2031. Also, the new deal comes with changes made to its date on the F1 calendar.
Originally, the race comes up in the latter part of May and that has been changed to the first week of June. The reason given for the change to date is reportedly to allow for enough time between races. Bear in mind, that Monaco GP comes up between Emilia Romagna GP in Romania and Canadian Grand Prix.
Speaking of the new deal, F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali explained that the new date will allow the body "to create an optimised calendar, which reduces pressure on logistics." He also pointed out that it will help to achieve the net zero target set "to decrease the environmental impact" of the sport globally.
The race in Monaco is one of the earliest Formula One races dating back to 1950. It is one of the iconic races that drivers hope to win being a street-bound race that it is in the beautiful city of Monaco. Often times, it comes with wet weather spells being that it comes up in late spring. However, as the new calendar has it, it will now be held be in early summer from 2026.
At the last race, home favourite Charles Leclerc finished in podium position and won the race ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who won the race the year before. Verstappen did not even make podium position as Carlos Sainz finished in third behind McLaren's Oscar Piastri.
