Shanghai Masters: Jannik Sinner Wins Final For Season's Third Master 1000 Title

For the third time this season, Jannik Sinner is an ATP Masters 1000 champion. He accomplished that after he defeated Novak Djokovic in straight-set 7-6(7-4) 6-3 in the hard-fought final of Shanghai Masters.

Djokovic was bidding for a record-extending fifth title in Shanghai, which should have brought his ATP singles title-spree to a record 100th title. However, Jannik was up to the task against the four-time champion, rallied to forced a tiebreak to win the opener, which set him off for the victory.

"It was a very tough match, obviously, playing against Novak is one of the tough challenges we have," Jannik complimented the fourth seed on his defeat.

After the Serbian had gained an advantage to lead the opening set at 1/2, then Jannik rallied, saved a break en route forcing a tiebreak. He quickly went 4/1 clear before winning a set-point on Djokovic forehand return. The decider was not much of a hassle for the world number one as he won a break to take a 3/1 lead and claimed his third consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title this season.

"I think I played some really good tennis, but congratulations to Jannik," said Djokovic. "He was just too good today. Too strong, too fast, well done. You're having an incredible year. You deserve this."

Meanwhile, Djokovic had been unbeaten in four consecutive finals at the Shanghai Masters until his fifth campaign against Jannik. He won his last in 2018 when he last reached the final of the tournament and last participated until this season.

Having won the trophy, Jannik became the youngest player to win the Shanghai Masters 1000. The victory brought his title-raid this season to a tally of six. He won his first ATP Masters 1000 this season at the Miami Open, the secon in Cincinnati, and lastly in the Shanghai Masters.
