Shanghai Masters: Jannik Sinner Gets In Final Showdown With Novak Djokovic

It is now just a title remaining for Novak Djokovic to reach the milestone of a century title-streak of ATP tours after coming clear in straight sets, 6-4 7-6(8-6) against Taylor Fritz in the Shanghai Masters semi-final.

Taylor gave the match his best and yet could not get past Djokovic, losing for the tenth consecutive time to the Serbian. He nearly pushed his luck after forcing a tiebreak but was held off at 5-6 as the fourth seed won three match points to completed the rout of the American.

As for the four-time champion, from his statement afterwards, it seemed to him as something of "destiny" reaching that milestone. Nonetheless, having to play against Jannik Sinner is something he admitted that can be tough. They met last at the Australian Open and Jannik making comeback in a rally stunningly eliminated Djokovic in the semi-final.

"He's in form the past 12 months, best player in the world," Djokovic said about the Italian. "He knows my game, I know his game. We haven't played since Australia this year. Yeah, I'm hoping for the best."

Jannik really is in incredible form, he has only dropped a set since the start of the tournament and defeated Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinal to set up a match against Tomas Machac. The top seed won his third break for a match point to bring the semifinal to a close.

Djokovic last reached the final and won the Shanghai Masters title in 2018, he has since not participated at the tournament. With the final in hand, he is set to extend his title-dominance at the tournament to five and for his 41st Masters 1000 trophy.
