Shanghai Masters: Alexander Zverev Out As Other Top Seeds Progress To Quarterfinal
Alexander Zverev could only go so far at the ATP Shanghai Masters and has been eliminated from the tournament in straight-set 6-4 7-5 defeat to David Goffin. He joined other top 10 seeded player like Stefanos Tsitsipas and Grigor Dimitrov on the exit in the round of 16.
Goffin rallied from trailing Zverev at 2/3 in the first set, and on taking the lead, he won a break before winning a set-point on the German's backhand return. The decider was even more tensed for the Belgian, who break twice to hold off a rally from Zverev at 6-5 amd completed the rout on the German's wide forehand return.
The second-seed hasn't won a title in Shanghai before nether has Goffin, but the enterprising match will set the winner of the round to meet Taylor Fritz in the quarter-final.
"I have built confidence from the beginning of the tournament. Match after match, I was playing better," said Goffin afterwards. "To stick to the plan that I had with my coach and it worked. Even though he cane back with some good rallies."
In separate and earlier matches, Novak Djokovic eased through his match against Roman Safiullin in straight-set 6-3 6-2, and likewise Carlos Alcaraz, after reaching the Last-8 from stratight-set defeat of Gael Monfils.
Furthermore, Daniil Medvedev is also through to the quarterfinal where he will face Carlos Alcarz, who defeated him in the semi-final of China Open.
